The WhistleTree Project is the the official blog of Dawn Davies, author of Mothers of Sparta and other award-winning works of nonfiction. This space is dedicated to readers, writers, teachers, and the literary curious—anyone who loves thinking deeply about writing, storytelling, and the strange, beautiful, often hilarious business of being human.

Here, you’ll find a wide range of essays, craft notes, reflections, and resources focused on writing and reading. Some posts expand on talks and workshops I’ve given at literary conferences or universities. Others explore my personal writing process, my interest in medical narrative, developing persona in memoir, and the evolving function of voice in creative nonfiction. You’ll also find book recommendations, writing prompts, and practical tips for emerging writers.

The blog also reflects the mission behind The WhistleTree Project: to rediscover the joy of literature through reading aloud, studying craft, and paying attention to the world with a writer’s eye. Some posts will highlight the read-aloud series, explore the importance of literacy in a screen-heavy world, or share strategies for helping children and adultsbuild deeper connections with language.

Whether you’re here to learn, be inspired, or find your next writing rabbit hole, I’m glad you stopped by. Use the categories and tags to find what speaks to you, and subscribe if you’d like to keep up with new posts.
